There are plenty of choices when looking for a CD drive. Once the only choice was speed, back then a 6x or 8x was about the fastest thing you could get, now the cheapest basic drive starts around 52x speed. There are plenty of choices when it comes to CD drives now and what you buy depends on what you intend to do with your computer. If you are only using your PC as a word processor, you may only use your drive once every 6 months so you may have no need for a expensive superfast drive. Most drives are called IDE drives that means they plug directly into the motherboard like a hard drive, some SCSI drives are also available, these need a SCSI card to operate. Below is a list of common CD /DVD Terminology.

CD-ROM

This stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory. This means you cant copy files to the disk. Most computers now have a CD-ROM Drive. These types of drive are very cheap.
Sony 52X Internal IDE CD Drive

CD-R

This stands for Compact Disk Recordable. You can copy files onto a blank disk only once, blank disks are very cheap and hold 650 to 700Mb. These drives are now hard to find new as CD-RW has now become more affordable ad will do the same job as a CD-R drive as well.
BenQ 52x32x52x CD-RW Drive

CD-RW

This stands for Compact Disk Rewriteable. You can copy files over and over again on a CD-RW disk, the disks are very expensive when compared to a CD-R disk. Most CD-RW Drives will also do CD-R.

DVD or DVD-rom

This Stands for Digital Versatile Disk. A DVD can hold much more than a CD can and only DVD drives can play both CDs and DVDs some new game come on DVD for added graphics.
PIONEER 16x 40x Slot Loading DVD-ROM Drive

DVD-R

This Stands for Digital Versatile Disk Recordable. You can copy files onto a blank disk only once. Like the CD-R these drives are now harder to find new as DVD-RW has now become more affordable.
